What happens when things go wrong

The adults in school will talk to you to understand what happened and why it happened. We will try to help everyone to see what went wrong and how we can make everyone feel better. We know it is important to say sorry when we have done something to upset someone. It is important that we mean sorry when we say it. We know that it is also important for the person who has been hurt or upset to forgive someone who has hurt them. We will try and help you to work toward this understanding.

What consequences teachers may give

  • Teachers may talk to you and explain why what you did was wrong
  • Teachers may talk to your parents and ask them to help you to do the right thing
  • Teachers may give you a plan explaining how they want you to behave
  • Teacher may share the plan with your parents so they can help you to do the right thing
  • Teachers may tell you to miss break in the morning or at lunch and ask you to do school work
  • Teachers may ask you to complete work at home
  • Senior teachers may move you away from the classroom if you are upsetting others

OLOL Statement on Bullying

This school is a place where everyone is special and has the right to be themselves. It’s a place where everyone can feel safe, be happy and learn. Everyone at our school belongs. We ask that everyone is kind to each other.  When things go wrong, we explain why it was wrong and work with you to know this. We take bullying very seriously because it means someone has hurt someone on purpose and we know that everyone must be treated well.

What is bullying?

Bullying is an unkind behaviour, such as being mean to others on purpose. Usually, Bullies repeat this bad behaviour over and over again.

Sometimes bullies use power to hurt people, they are bigger that someone or there are many people being mean to just one person.

Sometimes, people who bully others may be feeling sad or angry and might take their bad feelings out on other people.

By being responsible we can choose to be kind to others and help stop bullying.

What are some different types of bullying?

Being mean

Calling someone names, making fun of how they look or the way they speak are forms of bullying. Someone might do this to your face or online.

Leaving people out

If you leave others out on purpose, spread lies about them, don't let them speak or make them feel stupid, this is bullying.

Hurting others

Hitting, kicking and starting fights with other people are all forms of bullying.

Stealing and damaging

Taking things that belong to someone else, or damaging their things on purpose is a type of bullying.

What are some effects of bullying?

Bullying can upset you and stop you from doing well at school.

Bullying hurts people’s feelings and can stop them being who they want to be.

Bullying makes people feel lonely and left out

How can we get help to deal with bullying?

If you or someone you know is being bullied there are things you can do to try and stop it.

  • Tell an adult - this could be your parent, carer or teacher.
  • Talk to the bully - ask the bully to stop.
  • Be with friends you trust - surround yourself with people that treat you well.

It is never OK to see someone being bullied and do nothing (being a bystander). You can tell people to stop (become a defender) or you can tell an adult about what has happened.

If you tell a teacher or adult at school, they will be able to help you. Telling an adult will never make bullying worse. They will talk to you and the people bullying to find ways to stop the bullying and keep you safe.

In the classroom and playground, we use a colour system to quickly feedback how children are behaving. The standards for each colour are shared with children and are in each classroom to help everyone understand the behaviour we would like to see from everyone. We are sharing them below so that you can support us too.
